Having just read the newest Rich Words, I must say I am moved to respond in a more..well, serious tone. I think it's justified, so live with it.
I was going to bitch about the lame pop up adds on this site. (Nsuck anyone?) but I have decided not to at this time. I just think we should reflect on what Richard has said this time. It might do us some good if you truly sit down and just reflect on it.
As I read what Rich had to say, I could only think about how right he is. We spend so much time nit-picking away at our heritages, which is fine. Some may look down on one heritage over another, but I find that very silly. We're all a lot a like in the long run. We're all Americans, aren't we? It doesn't matter to me if I'm well let's see, my list is a bit longer than Rich's: Irish, German, French, Russian, Dutch, Scotish, English, Polish, Bohemian and Native American. When we get right down to it, I'm just an American. I'm 3rd Generation on one side of my family and that is amazing to think that even though I'm 3rd generation, I'm still very much a part of the Melting Pot of America.
I just can't help but feel that the wars that we've fought over our time as a country, how we treat those Vets who fought and survived. They put their lives on the line for our freedom.
When I think of how we treat Veterans, I think of Vietnam Vets the most. Why? My uncle was in that war and when he returned, no one thought of the sacrifie he had made. He, like many others, fought as a Ranger. The most dangerous position, and not many thanked him for saving freedom.(We Were Soliders is about his Ranger Troop)
We think about WWI and WWII more than any other of our conflicts. I often wonder why we over look Korea, Vietnam and most recently finished war, Desert Storm. I think, not only do we need to think about being free as Americans and being indivduals instead of flowing with pop culture, sometimes we should think of the vets of these wars.
I suppose I've depressed y'all. I promise to make fun of NSuck next time, okay? Make you feel better?
