The Fred Durst Controversy 6/5/02

I've stayed silent on this entire issue for several reasons- - -until now.  While I shouldn't have to even address this issue(I was looking forward to actually talking about Rich's ass after many weeks of waiting, but alas. . .) it is something that can not be ignored. It's a shame really,  that Durst has had to make this a public matter between himself and Rich. Maybe next time he'll think before speaking.

I know a lot of Limp Bizkit fans will stand up to defend Durst and Bizkit as Filter/Patrick fans will and have now and in the past. That's fine, as long as it is not outright bashing and heated to the point of being just as low as what has occurred, intentional or not. I understand how it is to be a strong fan of something and want to defend the people we are fans of, but sometimes it is time to take a step back and not throw mud that is untrue or unnecessary.

I had meant to post something like this directly to the Limp Bizkit "LimpBoard" and address this issue in a rational manner(though a few of you FDG members know how livid I was last night having listened to a certain Bizkit song titled "Hot Dog". That damn song.) and try to fan out the flames of fan feuding.

I know a lot of you are agitated by my mentioning my allegiances to both Filter and NIN, but I have seen the effects of a feud between fans of two bands and it is incredibly hurtful and unnecessary, nor does it make you or the band you support look good. Being a Filter and NIN fan is difficult sometimes due to this(Note: Meathead's latest Perspective comes to mind, and while I disagree with him, I can almost sense that Meathead is trying to do the same thing I am here, just not coming off as effective as he could have, in my opinion. While many people were attacked in that Perspective(Rich, Durst and even Hubka, it is not those who are actually named that are the intended targets. It is fans themselves who feud such as this could be come. Take that to heart if you read this Perspective.) feuding between the two fan bases. Frankly, not only is this feuding childish, it is not benefiting anyone.

I don't like Limp Bizkit or Fred Durst. I never have. Even before becoming a hard core Filter/NIN fan, I found Dursrt obnoxious and annoying and all around un talented, but I also realize that I hold this opinion on my own terms and have the right to hold that, just as fans of Durst/Bizkit have the right to exercise the opinion that Durst is talented and great. That's fine. I don't like fighting other fans for liking what they like, especially since people should decide what they listen to on their own merits. Attempts to convert people almost always fail.

Now about the latest controversy itself. I find Durst's excuse weak. I find the excuse "but that was a year ago when I really said that" to be a weak excuse. I would not get away with saying something like that, neither would you, so Fred should not as well. While I don't like to point fingers, I simply can not ignore the facts that Fred is at fault here. If he had not said the comments, no matter their age, we would not be seeing this mess, nor would have Rich said what he had on his site in response. Rather, things would have been quiet, as they should be.

Having that said, I know a lot of fans on both sides are angered by this entire controversy. I know some Bizkit fans have commented at the Limp Board that Rich should not suggest mental help. I tend to disagree with this, having helped friends of mine in the past get the help they need. While I, nor Rich, are qualified to assess what a person needs for mental health, when a problem arises and we care for a person, a suggestion of perhaps seeing a professional is something that we can do,  and it is left up to the person receiving the suggestion.

I also do not understand why it was something Durst felt he had to say to a Playboy interviewer about Rich. Frankly,  if I was Rich, I would be angry that a friend of mine had this to say about me and not directly to my face. To be responsible in such a situation would be to go directly to the person I am having a dispute with not to a reporter. In a private life if someone went to a local paper, made such comments about me, then got angry if I responded back in the same medium or into the media to defend myself, I would be even more offended than I was in the first place. I also know many of you would as well. Responsible people keep these things private first and don't run to the press. The fact that Durst is angry with Patrick for "not checking w/me first" is something he shouldn't say, actually. Did he check with Rich before he spoke to that interviewer? No. He didn't.

While I don't like to add fuel to a burning fire and cause more damage, I only can hope that people can see that the way this has gotten out of control, it is up to us fans to keep it from becoming an all out feud between Filter/Bizkit fans. I know that it's idealist to keep peace, but I'm not an idealist. I just get fed up with infighting when I try to discuss something legitimate. In fighting of the fans can lead to falsifies that never existed between people(ie: the Filter/NIN feud and an older one Rolling Stones/Beatles feud). Rather than attacking each other on the various message boards, instead lets discuss it in a rational manner. Trust me, I've seen enough rabid fighting(I'm an X-Phile remember. I would rather leave "rabid speak" out of this. I don't want to see crap like: "u is so stoopid bcuz u lik fiiilter") to know how destructive it is for fans and for the bands that fans follow. Let's keep it down be rational and realize this is not between the fans but rather between Rich and Durst.
