The Lost Cs: Conan and Carson. . 8/17/02

Well, I'm sure most of you caught these two performances, but if you didn't, you really missed something on Conan, sadly not nearly as much on Carson as far as performance goes. But hey! I'm gonna tell you about both and what I liked and what I didn't like and well, I'm going to make fun of Conan and Carson.

Conan's show was as I expected it to be. Boring, lame jokes and the maturity level of a ten year old boy, yet it's not the cute kind or the funny kind. It was in a word: lame. My only highlight before Filter came on was when they had in that question and answer thing about their drummer being gone was when Conan put the clip of Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band from Letterman up. I thought that was funny. The rest? Forget it. I just rolled my eyes an awful lot, waiting for Filter to take the stage. Not to mention the fact that earlier that night Jay Leno HAD to allow Dolly Parton to sing, which I muted. That's just one of my limits. I can't listen to her sing.

Anyways, moving onto the Conan performance itself. Now, a lot of people are asking, "What is the second single going to be?" A lot might gather that since Filter played "My Long Walk to Jail" that it would be that, but I doubt it. I think they just felt like playing that song for the helluva it. First thing I noticed was Steve's drumming, and then Rich had to scream so I noticed that. The bass and drums were really good through out the whole thing. I noticed that Alan didn't get nearly as much screen time a the rest of the guys, but I guess that's part of being the new guy. I thought his guitar work sounded good, though.

The funny part of the song was when Rich had to change the words to avoid the censors. I guess he's anti-beep on TV. I know I am. I HATE when the TV beeps to hide a naughty word. It's not like we're stupid guys. I think anyone can figure out what the hell was said beep or no beep. So, we went from "It makes me feel so fucking bad" to "It makes me feel so very bad." It's not the first time a rock group changed their words to perform a song. Gee, I wonder who did that first!

Back to the performance itself. . .I enjoyed how Rich adapted the song for the show, adding a few more screams in. It's certainly not what you might expect them to play on a talk show. I thought it was daring and exciting and besides, I've noticed something about when singles come out, people start to truly believe you only have one song. So, it's good to see a new song come out on TV like that from the new album, especially with the changes that were made to it.

Now for Lost Cause With Carson Daly. . .oops, I mean Last Call With Carson Daly. Is there really a difference? I really was irritated by Carson, but then that's typical. I kept thinking, "This man is a moron." After his first guest left the stage, Carson, proving his ability to be illiterate, said, "After the break, Filter!" Now, wait just a damn minute here. When did Filter go from being five guys to a blonde woman? Really, I would like to know, cause after that break this blonde woman was there instead. Oops. I guess Carson can't read. Not that I'm surprised by that.

After he was finished talking to the blonde woman, you know, the one who is now Filter, he once again proclaimed, "After the break, Filter!" I was dubious about that one. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, Carson. So, I waited until he announced them and actually had them on the stage to hit my record button. Ah well, the performance lacked. ..well to be frank, a lot.

I thought the music was decent but Rich's voice was very strained and tired. Which, happens, people. He's a human being after all. But, I thought that it was overall fairly listenable, if you didn't cringe as much as I did when Rich tried to sing higher notes. Off key doesn't suit him. If you don't expect off key, it surprises you.

I can't say that it was the most AWFUL thing I've ever heard. Once I actually listened to it through headphones, it turned out a bit better, but still lacked an awful lot. Mostly, I enjoyed the camera angles. They really made things look neat, even if the performance needed a few tweaks here and there.

And at the end? Carson grabbing Rich's hand? Hmm, we won't go there. I know that if I was on that show I wouldn't want to stay any longer than I had to. Really, he irritates me that much. Carson is just annoying. I'll leave it at that.
